Do you think of the liver as the organ that metabolizes fat?

If your answer was “yes”, then you are absolutely correct.

I have personally always made the association “liver=>fat metabolism”. However, this is just ONE of the MANY functions of the liver.

Would it surprise you to learn that the liver is responsible for making many HORMONES, including estrogen and testosterone?

According to D. Gary Young’s booklet, “Re-JUVA-nate Your Health”, the liver may be the most overworked organ in the body! It is responsible for:

  • Processing ALL food, nutrients, alcohol, drugs, and other materials that enter the bloodstream
  • Either STORING all food, nutrients, alcohol, drugs, etc or FILTERING them into the bloodstream so they can be distributed to the body through the circulatory system
  • Manufacturing BILE which has the ability to emulsify fats
  • Making and breaking down many hormones, including CHOLESTEROL, ESTROGEN, and TESTOSTERONE
  • Regulating BLOOD SUGAR levels
  • Removing or neutralizing poisons in the blood
  • Making proteins that regulate blood clotting
  • Producing immune cells to stop infection

“The quality of virtually every function your body performs depends on your liver”, according to Gary Young.

WHY is it that we know so little about this vital organ and often give very little thought to its function? Most of us are at least a little bit “concerned” about our heart functioning well……and perhaps the kidneys…… and possibly the stomach and digestive tract……but do we really think about the liver??? This was a huge “eye-opener” for me as I began to learn more.

What are signs that our liver may be functioning at a less-than optimum level?

(NOTE: ALL sub-normal liver function affects other organs and their functions. Therefore, the liver may be the root of other symptoms which manifest.)

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Overweight
  • Allergies
  • Sugar cravings
  • Rashes
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Recurring colds, fevers, and mucus
  • Over-burdened immune system
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Bad breath
  • Oily skin
  • Mood and behavior swings
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Skin blemishes
  • Gallstones
  • Poor and inadequate digestion
  • Excessive body heat
  • Excessive gas
  • Abdominal bloating after eating
  • Frequent or continued fatigue
  • Coated tongue when going without food for half a day
  • Sluggish metabolism

You may be thinking……”EVERYONE has at least one of these symptoms!” – And you would be absolutely CORRECT! In other words, we ALL have some degree of liver toxicity!!! WHY is this widespread phenomenon? Many of the stressors of the liver come from our ENVIRONMENT and our LIFESTYLES.

What are some of the things in the environment that create hazards to our health?

Pesticides, petrochemicals, many pharmaceutical drugs, parasites etc

What about our lifestyle?

Isn’t it easier to grab “fast food” than to eat more healthy alternatives? Excess of refined carbohydrates and sugars can cause fatty liver or liver degeneration over time. Inadequate protein can also be a major stressor.

It seems as if almost “everything” is a potential hazard to the liver, does it not??? Sooooo, what are we to do?

Perhaps it would be appropriate to focus upon detoxifying the liver FIRST rather than waiting until other organs are involved, producing symptoms that we find annoying enough to focus upon eliminating.

So, where do we begin?

Below is a simple recipe for ELIMINATING MUCUS. This would be a great place to begin the detoxification process as almost everyone has an excess of mucus in the body, and mucus creates the environment of many of our chronic and degenerative diseases. There will be a follow-up to this article which will include regimens that can assist us in restoring optimum liver function and foods that can assist us in maintaining the health of this vital organ.

  • 20 drops LEMON VITALITY Young Living essential oil
  • Sweeten with AGAVE
  • 1 liter (1 quart) WATER

Drink slowly throughout the day.

(NOTE: If consumed rapidly, it could cause stomach irritation due to the fact that it eliminates mucus rapidly.)
